BY STEPHEN SHAW Staff writer BOWMAN VILLE -- Durham Regional Police are hunting for two men suspected of trying to abduct a 13-year-old girl from a Bowmanville street. The teen was walking south on High Street near Fourth Avenue at lunch hour Monday, when a van stopped beside her and the driver struck up a conversation. ' "He asked the girl about where she was going and then continued driving northbound," said Sergeant Paul Malik, police spokesman. After driving a short distance, the van turned around, drove back and pulled up beside the girl, who grew afraid and walked faster. A male passenger got out of the van and grabbed the teen by the arm. "She was able to break free from the suspect and ran away screaming," said Sgt. Malik. The van sped away southbound after the 12:15 p.m. abduction attempt. attempt. Sgt. Malik praised the teen for "doing what every kid should be taught to do," which is to run away from an attacker and scream. In the wake of the report, he urged parents to make sure their children are street-proofed and to report any suspicious persons to police right away. Police, meanwhile, were out canvassing canvassing local residents looking for witnesses as investigators try to track down the suspects and the van.
