Randy Cruickshank, a member of the Kinsmen Club of Bowmanville, and Keswick native Kathy Alexander, Alexander, a Kinette, will leave Bowmanville Bowmanville on their bicycles May 30, making a stop in Keswick on their way before arriving in Timmins June 10. The Trek'to Timmins Two marks the fortieth anniversary of the Kinsmen's Kinsmen's commitment to raising funds and awareness for the Cystic Fibrosis Fibrosis Foundation. The 847-kilometre route will take them through most of Durham Region along Hwy. 2, then along Hwy. 11. "Neither of us has an affiliation to anyone with cystic fibrosis," said Mr. Cruickshank, "but when you meet children who have it, all you want to do is help them." The friends have been planning their adventure for two years, but Mr. Cruickshank said he wasn't sure what to expect when he approached- Ms. Alexander. "I was shocked when Kathy agreed," he said, "and she sounded really enthusiastic about the idea." Timmins is the destination for the trek because the Kinsmen of District 8 voted to adopt cystic fibrosis as the cause they would principally support at their District Convention in Timmins Timmins in 1964. The first Trek to Timmins Timmins took place in 1994, when Kinsmen Kinsmen Jim Eberly walked from Bolton to Timmins to raise funds for research research into the disease. The probability of a Canadian carrying the cystic fibrosis gene is 1 in 25. If two adults carrying the gene have a child, the odds that child will tie born with the disease is 1 • in 4; While the median age of survival for sufferers of cystic fibrosis is 35, in 1964 when the'Kinsmen Club took up the cause, the median age was 4. Mackenzie Financial, Tim Hortons, Hortons, Bell Canada, Ontario Power Generation, Grant Forest Products, St. Mary's Cement and Durham Regional Regional Police are the corporate sponsors sponsors behind the event.
