PAGE 2THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, June 23,2004 www.durhamrcgion.com Qariagtm Leading the Way ^ 905-623-3379 MAYOR S CORIVER This week I wanted to ask for some assistance from the residents residents regarding an important health care issue. You may recall my previous Mayor's Corner where I expressed my belief that growth should pay for itself, this is accomplished through the use of development charges (DC's). In doing so, existing residents do not have the burden of paying twice. The Municipality of Clarington and the Durham Region have been asking the Provincial governments of Harris, Eves and McGuinty to amend the Development Charges Act to allow for DC's on each new home built in Clarington and Durham to pay for Hospital Capital Expansion. Previous successful hospital hospital capital expansions in Ontario have had the ability to raise funds through development charges. The provincially legislated Development Charges Act was changed in the 90's to benefit residential developers and not our hospitals. I find this unacceptable. I am asking the residents of Clarington to email the Honourable Greg Sorbara, Minister of Finance at greg_sobara-mpp@ontla.ola.org. Let him know that our hospitals hospitals need this entirely acceptable way of funding.
