www.durhamregion.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JUNE 23,2004 PAGE 5 Durham Region cancer centre construction kicks off BY LESLEY BOVIE Staff writer , DURHAM -- A sea of dignitaries dignitaries turned up Friday to celebrate the official launch of construction for the long- awaited R.S. McLaughlin Durham Region Cancer Centre, Centre, but it was fund-raisers Chuck Powers and Don Blight who stole the show. "I think Chuck and I are probably walking as high as those cranes today," said Mr. Blight. The president of the Heroes of Hope Campaign announced his group has topped its $39- million goal, raising to date more than $41 million towards the cancer centre. Calling it "the eighth wonder wonder of the world," the two shared their elation at seeing construction move forward, but also their frustration of waiting for the 18-year-old project. "We've had our share of downs, delays and false starts," said Mr. Powers, the president of the Oshawa General General Hospital Foundation. "It's all served to test the resolve of our hospital boards," he said. "My one regret is that we weren't able to provide quality care to our citizens sooner. "I'd like to offer my personal personal apologies to those families families who were affected by the delays." Sporting a tie with faces to symbolize the many people involved involved in the effort, Mr. Powers Powers said Lakeridge Health's foundations and auxiliaries have raised a total of $96 million million for the construction of the Oshawa site. That includes $31 million raised by the Setting the Pace Campaign from 1991 to 1996 for the north wing, which will be built out with a new emergency emergency department, intensive care unit and operating rooms, along with the construction of the cancer centre. The $ 103-million construction, construction, being undertaken by El- lisDon Construction, is expected expected to be complete by Spring 2006. At Friday's launch, Lakeridge Lakeridge Health Chief Executive Officer Brian Lemon pointed out since the idea was first conceived in 1986, the plans for a cancer centre and hospital hospital redevelopment have evolved into a much larger project due to a greater demand demand for services. "Health facilities of this magnitude typically lake 15 to 20 years from the time they're hatched to delivery," he said. "We've had four changes of government since then. So we stand on the shoulders of the people who went before us and certainly acknowledge we're the beneficiaries of your efforts." Mr. Lemon also credited the physicians and nurses for providing top-notch health care despite being uprooted by the redevelopment. All working systems were disrupted, he said, and some departments "ripped apart" and relocated six . and seven times. Dr. Alan Hudson, president and chief executive officer of Cancer Centre Ontario said the Durham Region cancer centre is already being configured into cancer care delivery mod- els for othe facilities in the Greater Toronto Area and Ontario. Ontario. It's going to be "a major centre" in prevention, screen ing and acute care, he said.
