A Liberal stronghold since 1993, the rural riding was captured by Ms. Oda in a close race against Liberal hopeful Tim Lang,- garnering 20,712 votes (40.7 per cent of the vote) compared to her main challenger's 19,508 tallies (38.2 per cent). In total, almost 51,000 residents cast a vote in the Clarington-Scugog-Uxbridge Riding; approximately 78,000 people were eligible to vote in this year's election, election, meaning there was a voter turnout of about 65 per cent. As midnight passed and, Mr. Lang called to concede defeat to his Tory challenger, challenger, supporters at Ms. Oda's King Street small, campaign office celebrated the victory and the replacement of retiring Durham MP Alex Shepherd. "I vow and pledge to represent everyone everyone in my riding and I truly and sincerely thank everyone." Less than a kilometre west of Ms. Oda's office, a sombre crowd at a local pub slowly conceded a Liberal loss. As the numbers continued to be posted on television screens, Grit supporters yelled and cheered for the first 90 minutes or so after the polls closed until tallies began to show a slowly-increasing Conservative lead. After Ms. Oda's lead eclipsed the 1,000 mark, supporters turned their attention attention to cheering on other Liberal candidates candidates until Mr. Lang appeared, which brought a large round of applause. After making his way around the room, hugging and listening to messages of encouragement from his supporters shortly before midnight, Mr. Lang quietly conceded defeat in a back comer of the pub.
