PAGE 2 ♦ THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ November 24,2004 durhamreglon.com (Mi I0Œ1 Leading the Way ^ 905-623-3379 info@municipality.clarington.on.ca A couple of Corners ago, I made the statement that Clarington is booming. booming. Last week was further proof that Clarington's business community is indeed growing. Last Thursday (November 18, 2004), the Municipality joined Holburn Group of Companies in announcing the start of a scientific research park in the area of Bennett Road and Highway 2. This is good news for all of us. The Holburn Group began here in Clarington about 10 years ago and, now that it has outgrown its current location, they have decided decided to plant deep roots in this community. This investment in our future is proof that the Municipality is partnering with local businesses businesses to keep their business and jobs here where they belong. During the last year and a half, municipal staff has worked with representatives of Holburn to find and secure a new location to accommodate.their long term plans. The result of this collaboration is the 50 acre parcel of land that Holburn has purchased to accommodate accommodate their new 40,000 square foot building. The building will house laboratory space as well as Holburn's executive and research offices. Holburn represents an important new sector for Clarington's economy. Clarington is poised to become a significant player in the biomedical research and development industry. This scientific research and development development park is just the beginning. We have the opportunity to host an array of biotech research and development firms - from new starts to established multi-national firms looking to locate within the Greater Toronto Area. To ensure that we are ready to answer when opportunity knocks, Council has agreed to initiate a study for a Clarington Research and Technology Park that will include the initial Holburn Science Park site. The Municipality, Holburn, and the Clarington Board of Trade will partner to investigate ways of building on the entrepreneurial spirit to establish Clarington as a site for high tech industries. With the Holburn Group as the anchor, this endeavour is already on the road to success. The construction of Holburn's new facility is a major investment in the biotech industry and in this community. It will attract highly skilled jobs to Clarington that will diversify our economy and raise our profile in the research and development sector. This community community is destined for great things. This is just the beginning. .
