Community partners and their family members are invited to visit the YWCA of Durham on Thursday, Jan. 27, between 10 a.m. and noon for a reading corner, puppet show, activities and information about literacy literacy programs and services offered in Durham. The YWCA Durham Ontario Early Years Centre is located at 1 McGrigor St. in Oshawa and can be reached at 905-723-9922. DURHAM -- If you crave hearing your favourite 1980s tunes, try cutting a rug this weekend to help local scouts. The 18th Oshawa Scouts hosts its ninth annual volunteer appreciation and fundraiser fundraiser dance Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Courtice Courtice Community Centre in Courtice. This year's event is a Retro '80s night and a chance to thank volunteers who devote their time and resources each year for the children. It also helps raise funds for the scouts for such things as buying camping equipment, offsetting the cost of renting cabins at Camp Saniac and helping with the initial setup of additional groups for the growing community. Tickets are $15 each and include a silent auction, door prizes and late buffet. Donations from local businesses are also appreciated -- whether in the form of merchandise or cash. YMCA, Chapters team up at Durham Centre for storytime celebration DURHAM -- The YMCA of Greater Toronto has teamed up with Chapters bookstore in Ajax to celebrate celebrate Family Literacy Day.
