Traitering Special Warriors lose much more than a game Zack Greer gets carried off floor in final seconds BY SHAWN CAYLEY Staff Writer \ WHITBY -- When Zack Greer returned from his field lacrosse season at Duke University, it was expected he Would be the one to right the ship of the Whitby Warriors. However, he may not get the chance to do so. In only his third game back, Greer was the victim of a vicious crosscheck to the back of the head on Sunday . night when the Warriors travelled to Brampton to face the Excelsiors. With less than 10 seconds remaining in Brampton's 7-6 victory, an unsuspecting unsuspecting Greer was blind-sided by the blow to the head and crumpled to the floor. iHe laid on the floor for several minutes minutes -- minus the feeling in his hands -- before being transferred to a Brampton hospital with a neck injury. Warriors coach Jeff McComb, who was ejected from the game after the inci- Zack Greer dent, was none too pleased. "It was a vicious cheap shot with seven seconds left in the game. That should not be tolerated in our game," McComb said. "A lot. of our fans are young kids learning to Jeff McComb play the game. They don't need to see that kind of stuff go on." While the injury is not believed to be too serious, McComb wouldn't say when or if he expects Greer to return to the line-up. "If I was Zack Greer, would I want to come back and deal with this?" stated McComb,- who added this wasn't the first, time since Greer's return, that he lias taken such a-shot. "He has a $40,000 scholarship' at Duke. Why would he want to come back and continuously continuously take shots' to the head like that? It isn't worth it." As for the game, one bad period led to the loss. The Warriors lost their focus in the middle frame and were unable to contain a Brampton squad that scored all seven of their goals in that period. "It wasn't pretty," McComb said of his team's second period performance. "If you don't bring your A game every night in this league then you're not going to win. The top handful of teams are. all so close right now, anyone can beat anyone." Friday night's game, was a much different story, as the Warriors played what McComb called their best of the season, a convincing 12-2 romp over the Six Nations Arrows. It was easily their most complete game at both ends of the floor. Goal- tender Rick Passfield was solid when called upon, and the offence, led by Greer and Kyle O'Brien, finally broke out as 15 different Warriors managed to hit the scorcsheet. Greer notched two goals and three assists, while O'Brien showed off his playmaking skills with five assists. Tyler Perry (3), Matt Savoie (2), Shane i s 11- Sargent, Marc Jackson, Alex Henderson, Henderson, Mike McKenzie and Jimmy Muni- ford added single tallies. The Warriors hosted the first of back- to-back games with Toronto Beaches last night (after our deadline). Tomorrow Tomorrow they will travel to Toronto for the second half of the home-and-home series. NOTES: Jeff McComb is putting together a tape to send to the league regarding the hit Greer took against Brampton, but is not confident anything will come of it. There was no penalty called on the play... Ian Crashley and Matt Carroll both received game misconducts misconducts after getting into fights at the end of the- game and could face repercussions. repercussions. McComb said the Warriors will "buy out" any suspensions that may arise from the incident: 3 gig S i g s»8 2 lia 111 ill ill s ! 1 i$ I ■5i<3 «I S m cn.I i? r <5 £ 2 g m q -S Œ Q O {Z 1 • °? s i I -i I ; >-3j" sl 15 I s b a g s =35*55? mUKHtHIM fweitiment of our new line-up ol CMC models.
