THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ JULY 6,2005 ♦ PAGE 13 durhamrcgion.com Redmen playoff hopes are flickering Loss to Six Nations might be the fatal blow BY BRIAN MCNAIR Staff Editor WHITBY -- The Six Nations Chiefs showed up about half an hour late for their game with the Brooklin Redmen last Wednesday night. Unfortunately, the Redmen showed up about half a game late -- and, in all likelihood, it has killed their playoff hopes. After being delayed in traffic and arriving arriving late for their Major Series Lacrosse match at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre, Centre, the visiting Chiefs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and built it to 13-3 early in the second period en route to a 19-13 victory. So rather than narrowing the gap to two points on the Chiefs in the battle for the final playoff spot, the Redmen fell six back with a 2-10 record. Considering Considering three of their remaining six games are against the league's top two teams, the Redmen will likely need a miracle in order to qualify for the playoffs now. "We're still shooting for it," said interim interim coach Ian McGough. "We've got to find a way to win three games, maybe four." ■ mm ■"I wr ' 1 They certainly didn't find a way to win last week, as the Chiefs twice chased Gee Nash from the net with a dominant first half. The Redmen did manage to outscore the Chiefs once Nash was gone for good, 7:43 into the middle frame, but it was far too little, too late. "It was a very big game for us and unfortunately we came up with our worst effort of the year," said McGough, who now has an identical 1-5 record to fired coach Wayne Colley. "The whole team was in a daze for the first period." Although the Redmen are by no means the same team they were last season, when they finished atop the regular sea-: son standings, they're not as bad as their current record indicates, most -would agree. • "We're certainly better than a two-win team," says McGough. "Our talent level isn't where the big boys are, so we have to outwork other teams. We certainly didn't do that (Wednesday)." Captain Shawn Williams, at least, is having another big season. The defending defending league scoring champ had four goals and an assist to give him 64 points in 11 games. Jeff Zywicki also had a five-point night, including a goal, while Mike McLellan (3g), Steve Hoar (lg,2a), Garett Kikok (3a) and Steve Toll (3a) picked up three points each. Jon Durno, Derek Suddons, Ryan Sharp and Mike Morrison scored the other Brooklin goals.
