'We Svm A , v V mi i hell on earth' Mother reaches out ' to students at Red Ribbon launch BY JULIAN FOLLERT Staff Writer ' DURHAM - Eva Gainer's eyes pass slowly over the crowd in the Bowmari- ville High School auditorium, taking in the giggling, the jostling, the friendly chatter as the students gather up backpacks backpacks and shuffle towards the doors. The Durham chapter, of Mothers'Against~> r Drtink Driving (MADD) hasfjust .finished kicking off/this year's Red Ribbon cam- - paign at the school and, as one of- the guest speakers, Ms. Gainer is happy to see many of the students wearing MADD lanyards and picking up Red Ribbon col- -, lection boxés./ v : ? • With a wistful smile she mentions that her son Brian would be about the same age as most of these kids -- if he had lived , to see high school. Just over five years ago, Ms. Gainer was travelling with her husband, 11-year-old son Brian, and a family friend, when a drunk driver slammed into their van. Her husband and son were killed. Her friend is still partially paralyzed to this day. Ms. Gainer suffered broken ribs, collapsed lungs and head injuries among other horrors. "I now know what excruciating pain is," she says. • : Aside from struggling with vulnerable ; lungs that often fall prey to pneumo- : nia, Ms. Gainer has mostly recovered from her physical injuries, and has even returned to her job as a teacher, spending half-days in the kindèrgarten room at Dr. C.F. Cannon RS. in Oshawa. But, no amount "of time will heal the emotional wounds of losing a husband and child. Her other two children are still struggling with the loss of their father and younger brother. "You can replace cars and clothes and everything else, but you can't replace people," Ms. Gainer says. "Our family has been left devastated beyond words... we know hell on earth." This is the 18th year for the MADD Red Ribbon campaign, which runs front mid-November to the beginning of January, January, to promote sober driving during the holiday season. Red ribbons are tied to car antennae and key chains across the country, raising both awareness and funds for MADD education programs. While the sober driving message is " always the same, the fact that MADD Durham chose to launch this year's campaign campaign at a school has special meaning according to campaign chair John Gillis. "We want to get the message out to students students that drugs are just as bad as alcohol if you're driving," he says. "There seems to be this misconception that if you use drugs like marijuana or cocaine, you might not be as impaired as if you were drinking and that's not true." MADD Durham is encouraging drivers of all ages to simply plan ahead this season, season, whatever type of partying they plan to enjoy. Arranging a designated driver beforehand, taking a cab, spending the night or walking home arc some tips to keep in mind forpartygoers, and hosts are reminded that they can be held liable lor providing alcohol to intoxicated guests who then injure themselves or others, For more information about MADD and the Red.
