durtiamregion.com Durham to help local hostels Region to the rescue with $61,000 BY CRYSTAL CRIMI Staff Writer DURHAM -- The Region is giving $61,000 to local hostels, even though some councillors say the Province should put up the cash. Durham council passed a motion Nov. 30 that will see Cornerstone Community Community Association Durham Inc. receive $26,280, the Muslim Welfare Home $10,220, and the YWCA $24,090. But some councillors were concerned about spending regional money on a provincial problem. "When does it stop?" asked Clarihg- ton Mayor John Mutton. Oshawa Regional Councillor Cathy Clarke said Durham will have even bigger bigger problems if local hostels close. Earlier in the day, councillors received a presentation by Eva Martin Blythé, executive director of the YWCA Durham, Durham, on the financial and service delivery delivery issues for its Adelaide House, an emergency hostel for women and children. children. "The homeless women and children in Durham are depending on us," said Ms. Martin Blythe. She said the hostel runs more than a $30 deficit per person, per bed, per day. "We're digging a hole and the dirt's coming in on top of us," said Ms. Martin Blythe. The YWCA has already reduced staff and taken pay cuts on the administrative side. Uxbridge Mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor said if the Province isn't coming to the forefront to help people in need of hostels, hostels, the Region has to do something. "If we can help these people for one year, I think we should do it," said Mayor O'Connor. "I cannot turn my back on people this vulnerable." Included in council's motion is another another request for the Minister of Community Community and Social Services to increase the hostel per diem to better reflect operating operating costs at Durham hostels, along with other considerations. Regional Chairman Roger Anderson said a letter should be written to the Province listing the impact the funding has on local taxpayers and letting it know it won't be provided again. HEY KIDS!
