I was completely uneducated. I had no idea what was involved." Today, the Courtice resident is counting carbohydrates and recording her daughter, Ash- lèigh's, blood sugar. She's also a volunteer and member of the board of directors at the Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre in Whitby, Whitby, which was founded in 1989 to provide young people and their families with education and support for children living with T^pe 1 diabetes. "They teach you how, to deal with it in your daily life - how to work in activities, how to work in treats, how to work in things that normal kids want to experience," Ms. Czop said. "Just going to the park by yourself, a friend's house, it's a completely different event for my daughter because I'm worried about her experiencing experiencing low blood sugar." Ashleigh, who wjears an insu- . lin pump to give her a steady insulin stream, s4id sometimes she wishes she never had Type 1 diabetes. "Sometimes it's hard," Ashleigh Ashleigh said. "You -- want to be like other kids. You don't want to have to keep poking poking your fingers and doing things With my pump all the time." "What we're here to do is help young people with Type 1 in Durham Region, so if people want to give to help make a difference in diabetes diabetes then the money stays here in Durham Region when people donate to our centre." , Ms.' Grass said the centre, a registered charity, receives its funding through its own efforts and donations from other Durham Durham businesses and sponsors. With November being Diabetes Awareness Month, she said it's the perfect time to highlight the centre and Type 1 diabetes. "There's a lot of requests out there from a lot of national organizations organizations for money, for research and so on, and I think that's important," she said. "But I think it's also very important to help the person on the street with diabetes, diabetes, in particular, people with type 1 diabetes because it's such a challenging, ongoing difficult problem to' deal with, fraught with complications both shortterm shortterm and long-term if they don't look after it "type 2 is not easy either, don't get me wrong, but it's different. I feel very strongly that they need help too, but this population has been grossly overlooked." For more information, call the Charles H.
