Experience to come in handy From page 1 before entering politics. He then spent 10 years as a member of provincial parliament, parliament, where he was in Ernie Eves's cabinet cabinet as minister of enterprise, opportunity and innovation, and in Mike Harris's cabinet as deputy premier and minister of finance, among others. Like Mr. Flaherty, Ms. Oda is stepping into her cabinet role with a great deal of experience under her belt. Although it was rumoured Ms. Oda, the former Conservative Party critic for the ministry of heritage, could be appointed to the portfolio when the Tories took a minority government on Jan. 23, Ms. Oda said she was not expecting to get the position. Ms. Oda said it was a day or two before Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced his cabinet that she received a call. "I thanked him very much for his confidence," Ms. Oda said. "I told him I looked forward to being a part of his government and it is going to be a good government." The department, she explained, is responsible for a number of different things, including Canada's identity, broadcasting, culture, arts, art galleries, national ceremonies and many foundations. foundations. "It is quite a large department," Ms. Oda said. She brings an extensive resume of experience to the position, including 25 years in the broadcast industry, and theatre experience. Ms. Oda is a graduate of the University University of Toronto and was a teacher for six years. She then served as a full-time CRTC commissioner. She served as co chair of a national task force on diversity on Canadian television and, in 2003, was inducted into the Canadian Broadcasters Hall of Fame. The days since her appointment have been extremely busy and Ms. Oda said she has not yet started to think about where she will take the portfolio. "I will just be starting to meet with senior officials and begin being briefed," Ms. Oda said. "Then we will set out an action plan." She has "no idea" when that action plan might be completed.
