As a result of this combined effort fatalities resulting from traffic collisions across Canada have decreased by 33% since 1984, even while the number of licensed drivers has been increasing. Despite this effort however, approximately 30 people are killed each year in the Durham Region as a result of motor vehicle collisions, many more people are injured seriously enough to require hospitalization. At the municipal level we are responsible to design, construct and improve roads so that they are safe for all road users. We maintain maintain roads to keep them safe year round, and work hand in hand with police, safety organizations and community volunteer groups to address concerns and to develop innovative and appropriate community based solutions that make our roadways safer, ease congestion and reduce injuries. Traffic engineering and road design is where traffic safety all begins begins and roadways are designed to provide operational efficiency, comfort, safety and convenience for the motorist. The roadway, vehicle, and individual users are all integral parts of transportation transportation safety and efficiency. On our existing road system the Municipality continually monitors all of these characteristics and makes improvements as conditions and traffic volumes require. As well, when the Municipality considers upgrading an existing road, we-always take that opportunity to review the current design and to make improvements where possible. Once the road is in place the number one safety issue is the condition of the roadway and our Operations Department operates operates in accordance with the Ontario Minimum Maintenance Guidelines to inspect and maintain Clarington's roads. During the winter months, depending on temperature and the desired result, materials are chosen to ensure that the roads are kept clear of snow and ice. We conduct regular road and sidewalk inspections and make repairs where necessary. We also provide appropriate pavement markings and road signage that maximize safety. Further to traffic engineering and road maintenance we also work with important traffic safety partners such as the police, our local Road Watch Committee and the Clarington Traffic Management Advisory Committee which is comprised of staff, Council representation, representation, police, Region of Durham staff and voting members of the public who work together to address safety issues. Finally, however, there really is no substitute for a defensive driver who observes the rules of the road because it is true that "Seatbelts Save Lives" and that "Road Safety is No Accident". info@clarington.net COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS The Council of the Municipality of Clarington is seeking applications from interested individuals to fill the following positions: Clarington Accessibility Advisory Committee -- to advise Council on accessibility related issues within the Municipality - meetings are held the first Thursday evening of every month - 3 positions (in accordance accordance with the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001, the majority of committee members shall include people with disabilities) Clarington Traffic Management Advisory Committee - to review existing and future traffic management practices - meetings are held the third Thursday evening of every month - 2 positions for Ward 1,1 position for each of Wards 3 and 4 Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee - to make recommendations recommendations on the preservation of structures of historical and/or architectural significance - meetings are held the second Tuesday evening of each month -1 position Samuel Wilmot Nature Area Management Advisory Committee - to assist the municipality and the Ministry of Natural Resources in the management of the Samuel Wilmot Nature Area - meetings are held monthly -1 position Clarington Highway 407 Community Advisory Committee - to review the need and justification for the Highway 407 extension and the environmental, social, cultural and economic issues associated with the proposed highway - meetings are held monthly -1 position for Ward 2 If you wish to be considered for these appointments, please submit an application to the Municipal Clerk's office by 5:00 p.m., Friday, March 17, 2006.
