Sommer West may not be a name that you are familiar with unless, of course, you have a daughter who loves to play hockey. Sommer is the grand-daughter of successful successful (local) business man Tom Cowan Cowan and is a forward with the Beatrice Aeros in the 7 year old National Women's Women's Hockey League (NWHL). The ' NWHL is the highest level of women's ice hockey in the world. It is currently made up of all Canadian teams but there are plans to expand into the US in the coming seasons. The 2006 season came to a close recently for Sommer and her team mates which means they won't be competing for the ,national championships championships scheduled for April 15, 2006 in Brampton (Brampton Thunder take on the Montreal Axion). Despite this disappointment, Sommer's Sommer's individual effort has been recognized. recognized. She has been named the "NWHLhockey.com Offensive Player of the Year." Sommer finished the season with 28 goals (1 st) and 27 assists (2nd) in 35 games. According to Aero's Co- Coach Stephanie White, Sommer is an all-around player and leader who has proven herself to be a valuable asset to the Aero's organization organization and to the National Women's Hockey League. When not playing hockey, Sommer excels at her second sport - baseball. She is an all-star short stop and represented her country (and home town) at the 2000 Olympic Summer Games in Sydney Australia.
