"The board has been doing it for many years and shouldn't have," he said of the fee: " "T^e^iEti tic iit I oil ' .Açt'j'jsaÿ.s ' you have to. provide books and are excluded from charging a deposit." .The issue arose, he said, in the normal five-year review process of the book deposit policy. "We'd had complaints from parents and tried to get clarification clarification but didn't receive any in the past," Mr. Allison said. "This time we got a quick clarification from the (Ministry of Education) and our lawyer." The book-deposit policy had been in. place in the former Peterborough Board of Education Education since the 1970s, he said and was adopted when the school boards were amalgamated. The former Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education did not have a deposit policy prior to amalgamation. According to Mr. Allison, each fall about 3,000 Grade 9 students students were asked to pay the $30 deposit when they began high school, meaning the board collected collected about $270,000, which was kept on deposit. As well, each year about 3,000 students graduate, meaning the school board paid out an equal amount in refunds. In June the KPR will send a ■ "cheque' home with' ' each /student's /student's report card reimbursing the family for the $30 book deposit, Mr. Allison said. Students who lose books must still pay to replace the books. E O' o ijf* . Q ZSti p . "The project will significantly upgrade overall reliability in these areas and addresses some local concerns about outages over the last year," said Hydro One customer customer relations manager Dave Page. "We are listening to our customers and taking steps to address their needs." The work is absolutely necessary, necessary, said Veridian chairman John Mutton. ... "The service reliability that Veridian does not have control over is so important not only to our residents but to businesses out here," he said, noting Clarington council had called on the Ontario Energy Board several months ago to have Hydro One make some improvements. "I'm very pleased that Hydro One is repairing some of the infrastructure." The project involves replacing about 400 insulators on major 44,000 volt circuits throughout Clarington, and an additional 400 insulators on lower voltage lines serving Hydro One customers customers from its Park Road distribution distribution station in Courtice. As well, 12 new lightning arrestors that protect the circuit from lightning damage will be installed along with a series of electrical fault indicators. The indicators will help more quickly identify the location of an electrical fault in the case of a power outage. That allows crews to get to the site of the actual cause in a shorter period of time. The work began in mid-January and is expected to be completed in mid-April. All the work being done will not interrupt service to customers. * 1 (905) 434-4603 1 1 Offer expires March 31", 2006 | ■ WfeLCOME WAGON' v V Since 1930 % ;t'D, E§§ 8 -3et <üs Welcome "You/ Our Hostess will bring gifts & greetings, along with helpful information, about your new community Attention business Q-wners: Find out how your business can reach new customers, generate additional sales : and increase à\vareaüÿs,üf this.area; " Catt c Wc[come c Wagon 905-434-2010 www.welcomewagon.ca ■■'ogle Custom upholstery, auto, marine, RV Custom Upholstery ■ Automotive & , Boat Tops Marine Interiors Mooring Covers ■ Convertible Tops www.premiereautosolon.com • Serving Durham Since 1985 It (S"f 1010 Brock Road South (Northwest comer at Bayly) AUTO.GLASS & CUSTOM UPHOLSTERY 1 -877-BOAT TOP(262"8867) COUPON COUPON COUPON COUPON BROKEN WINDSHIELD?
