durhamvcçjion.com Warriors to rely on ex-Gaels in pursuit of Minto Cup THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ April 19,2006 ♦ Page 15 Shane Sargent and Joel Weber top list of new faces in Warriors fold for • Jr. A lacrosse season BY SHAWN CAYLEY Staff Writer ' WHITBY -- It Jeff McComb's forecast forecast is correct, the Whitby Warriors are going to be in pretty good shape when the 2006 Ontario Lacrosse Association season opens up in a little under two weeks time. In a move many expected to occur, McComb admitted goaltender Joel \Veber, a stalwart between the pipes for the Junior B Clarington Green Gaels last season, will assume the No. 1 hetminding duties for the Warriors in 2006. , "We are pretty confident, with his skill level, that he won't have too much of a problem making the jump," McComb said of Weber moving up to Jr. A. "Rick Pass field stepped in a few years ago after being probably the best goaltender in Junior B, and we think we'll have the same success with Joel. He has looked really good so far and we expect that to continue." • Speaking of Passfield, the Warriors had hoped to honour their former goal- tender, who died last October while training at Bellarmine, University, on opening night. However, their game, which normally would be played out ■ ot Iroquois Park, has been moved to the McKinney Centre, forcing them to postpone such a ceremony. "We are going to hold off on that a little while," said Warriors president Mark Brown, •The venue just wouldn't be big enough to do something like that, so unfortunately, we'll have to do it later on." ! Brown added that on opening night, May 9 against Brampton, the Warriors \vilL hold a fan ' appreciation night, where everyone who shows up receives free admission. Back to the floor, and bn the offensive offensive front, expect Shane Sargent, who posted stellar 39-62-101 numbers with Shane Sargent Joel Weber the Green Gaels last season, Justin Fox (27 goals) and Phil Mcllhone (21 goals), to add to an already talented group that will include Zack Greer, Kyle O'Brien and Brad Levick, who potted 11 goals in seven playoff games last year, only six off his entire regular season total. "I think we know those guys, Zack and Kyle, they're going to be there once they return from school and adding adding what we will up front, it's going to be a pretty formidable group," said the coach. "Fox, Mcllhone, and Sargent; we are going to expect a lot out of those guys." McComb, who is an assistant with the NLL's Portland LumberJax, said while waiting for some of their veterans veterans to return from school, it has given Warriors brass a chance to take a close look at some of the young guys that have remained in camp since they split off from their joint training with the Green Gaels. "We've been out twice on our own now with mostly young guys and it's been looking pretty good," he said with a hint of satisfaction. "It's tough though, because we really only have three of four spots left to fight for." Those vying-for the jobs will have their chance to impress in game action on Friday night when the Warriors host the Peterborough Lakers at the McKinney McKinney Centre in their first exhibition game.
