Attersley, who served as mayor of Whitby from 1980 to 1991, < ai l d Brunelle, the current mayor since 1997, have travelled with the Senior AAA hockey team to the Allan Cup national championships in British Columbia, where they hope to revive feelings they haven't experienced since the late 1950s. Attersley knows firsthand how the adrenaline flows from a „• hockey player, having been such an integral part of the historic :■ Dunnies'Allan Cup victories in 1957 and 1959 and the famous < world championships in 1958. v 1° fact, Attersley scored the winning goal, plus another and »-hn assist, in a 4-2 victory over the Soviet Union in 1958's final '-game in Oslo, Norway. 'v And Brunelle remembers Attersley's heroics well. He lis- :îîl ned t0 the cham P ionshi P S 3 " 16 on the radio as a 15-year-old '-boy and then attended the homecoming parade at Whitby's "four comers. -v h's partly because of those memories that Brunelle threw his , support behind the club shortly after the idea was pitched to ' him by Mike Laing and Steve Cardwéll. "At first I was a little skeptical," recalled Brunelle, who .'quickly warmed to the idea when he learned Attersley was ,'hll for it. "It gave me a great deal of comfort knowing he wàs there... It's great to feel I was part of making it all possible '•♦again." ; Now both men are so eager to see the Allan Cup dream real- - ized again that they've travelled all the way across the country i to soak it in. ' I ve been following them all year," Attersley explained dur- ! '"g the Dunlops' Monday practice in B.C. "I've spent a lot of ; time with them out here and I like whàt I see with the chemistry. chemistry. Uiey're a knitted group and that's good. It takes everybody to win a'hockey game." Attersley hopes the players can experience something similar to what he felt in 1958, which remains to this day his sportine highlight. "I think it's something that really lingers with you long after it happens because I think representing the country is the biggest biggest thing one person in any sport can do," he said. "It feels like you're playing not only for your own community but all of Canada." . , - Hockey players being a superstitious'lot, the team welcomed ! the news that Brunelle has teen granted permission to sing the ! national anthem prior to their games in B.C. | The mayor claims the team has only lost one game in Whitby ! afterhe's belted out the tuhe; and that was a game in which he ! left early to attend a council meeting, r "I want them to have that.little bit extra to help them get over I the hump and win this thing," said Brunelle, Whitby's own ; Kate Smith. "I've tried as much as I can to bring something to ; them, to let them know they do belong in Whitby, that they're 1 part of us. "We're making history here," the mayor added. "I hope this week we bring the Allan Cup home... They very much mirror to me what I saw in 1958 as a young man. Let's just hope."
