MifcSetort Metroland among sponsors of event BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer DURHAM - Teaching children to think and act ethically is a matter of removing three agents -- hating, hoarding hoarding and harming, says renowned parenting parenting author and speaker Barbara Coloroso. Coloroso. Giving children ways to "care deeply, share generously and help "willingly," and stopping those three H's from taking taking over is the central theme of Ms. Coloroso's new book, Just Because. It's Not Wrong Doesn't Make It Right: From Toddlers to Teens, Teaching Kids to Think and Act Ethically. 1 The book will be the subject of an upcoming Rainbows Speaker Series event featuring Ms. Coloroso, in Osha- wa. The event, co-sponsored by Durham Region Media.Group, is set for Sunday, April 30, at 1:30 p.m, at Eastdale Collegiate, Collegiate, 265 Harmony Rd. N. Proceeds of the event will benefit Rainbows, a peer-support .program for children, youth and adults who have experienced a separation, divorce or death within their family. Msl Coloroso, well-known for her first book Kids are Worth It! Giving Your Child The Gift Of Inner Discipline, Discipline, said the idea of the book is more about èthic than ethics. While ethics tend to be more philosophical philosophical or theological theory, ethic, she said, provides "a basic human moral attitude -- a way of being in the world connected so deeply and pervasively to the whole of .our humanity that there ■ is no need to impose it, regulate it or ' enforce it." t It's something parents can model for their children from the very beginning, ; she said in an interview from her Colorado Colorado home. "I believe ethic is more caught than . taught," she said, noting the way parents parents act toward people is picked up on •by their children. : "If I'm conscious that my kids are learning from me, then that's a heads .up." • : Kids should be raised to do the right ■thing because it's the right thing to do, not because they'll be rewarded from it, said Ms. Coloroso. , "We're seeing a whole generation of |k$s who have.bepn raise,d with stickers ; <and stars," she Said', noting studies jiave -■ ?shown that type of system can backfire. "If you do these things as part of everyday everyday life, they come more naturally than ■if"you impose a character-education 'program in a school ... The more you reward a kid for being generous, the ■less.likely they are to be generous when 'there's nothing in it for them." . The, increasing role of the media is also an issue, noted Ms. Coloroso. ; "It's important- for parents to rec- i J6W FMMIR INDENTS, STAFF AMI FIIFNIS 8F Tit SCIDOlASWt MARK 1 IE CARES OF FRENCI IMMERSION AT ONTARIO STREET P.S. Being aware of what children are seeing online and in other media is extremely important, she noted. Of all the points she makes of what parents can do, she said this, from her website at www.kidsareworthit.com, is most important: "Stay involved with your children: unplug the TV, turn off the computer, confiscate the batteries to the Game Boy and lose the headphones. Get outside outside and explore your neighbourhood together, get involved in a community community project, cruise a river, climb a rock wall, ride bikes, take a hike, share a picnic lunch, look at the stars. It's a big galaxy out there." Parents, should "do everything they can to curb the inclination to. hoard and to harm," she said. "What I would wish for any child is that they have enough - enough food, enough education," she said. "The me, mine and more destroys all of us and our relationships." --• - ( ei %^fe'fd'^ftlAffernpQn;iW(.ith,Bari3aFi* fraColorosO lara-availablei at Ghaptcrsimv ■ the Oshawa Centre,- Coles-in OshawaV Five Points Mall, Coles in Uxbridge, and Chapters in Durham Centre in Ajax.
