Page 6 ♦ THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ May 3,2006 Best year ever for Darlington Nuclear BY JENNIFER STONE Staff writer BOWMAN VILLE -- Last year was the best ever for Darlington Nuclear, as the generating station continues on its path to being one of the best in the world, said senior vice-president Gregory Smith. Mr. Smith told Clarington council Monday that Darlington, in 2004 and 2005, was the best performing nuclear plant in all of Canada, providing 17 per cent of all the power used in Ontario in 2005. The 2,300 workers at the plant were key to the success, he said. "It takes more people to make a megawatt of nuclear energy than any other type of electricity," he said. "People are the key to successfully operating any world-class nuclear generating generating facility." The strong safety culture within the plant, "even when it's hard, even when no one is watching and might not even notice," led to the plant having no losttime losttime accidents in 2005 during maintenance maintenance outages". In fact, 5.5 million work hours were completed without such an accident, said Mr. Smith. Working to ensure human error doesn't occur is also a priority, said Mr. Smith, noting OPG employees try to find "proactive approaches to predicting predicting where human errors may occur and putting barriers in place to ensure those errors don't occur." Darlington has also seen'a 10 per cent improvement in the amount of electricity generated since 2003, with its capability factor increasing from 82-per cent in 2003 to 90 per cent in 2005. The plant has also worked toward and made gains on meeting standards to be ranked among the world's best, said Mr! Smith. Being part of the community is very important to OPG, he noted. "We're proud to be part of the Clarington Clarington community and want to continue continue to make a positive contribution," said Mr. Smith. durhamregion.com Clarification An article that appeared in the April 26 Canadian Statesman about Legions lowering their flags to half-mast when Canadian soldiers are killed in Afghanistan Afghanistan requires clarification. Bowmanville Legion. Branch 178 president Jim Connell did get back to the newspaper after deadline and the flag outside the Legion will be lowered to half-mast. But, others said it was up to the Ministry Ministry to purchase such expensive, equipment. equipment. "So many times we talk about downloading downloading from the Province, and how it's foisted on us, and we have no choice," said Regional Coun. Jim Schell. "This time, we're saying, 'Bring it on.' This is unfortunately wrong oh so many levels." The request doesn't fit the Municipality's Municipality's grant criteria, which does not allow grants to organizations that should be funded by other levels of government, noted Coun. Schell. "We really recognize that the Orono Crown Lands are a jewel in this municipality, municipality, but we've got to say, 'No'," he said. "If we accept this, we might as well just open the doors."
