A group of about 40 students, each with a blow-up manikin of just a head and chest, is learning how to do something something that could eventually help them save a life., The Family and Friends CPR Anytime Anytime program was introduced at Mother Teresa School in Courtice last week, part of a pilot project launched in three areas - Toronto and Edmonton are the others - last week. The. program aims to teach basic GPR. Each student is provided with a kit, including a manikin, a booklet and DVD, which they are to take home. Their homework: share the informa tion they have gleaned from the 22-minute video and act as facilitators to friends and family, who can also learn the life-saving technique using the kit. "A lot of people have trouble trouble getting to a four-hour CPR course," said Michael frcmelh of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Those who use this method of learning won't be certified without additional training in CPR, but still, may learn enough to be confident to use the technique, should they find someone in distress, said Mr. Nemeth. The kits, made by a medical company, have been available in the U.S. for about a.year, and this pilot project is the first foray for the course into Canada, he said. "Heart and Stroke Canada and the American Heart Association is collaborating collaborating so that CPR guidelines are the same for all of North America," he said. The manikins have a clicker, which allows audio confirmation that those administering CPR arc pushing. hard enough. As well, the chest of the manikin manikin rises and falls in response to mouth- to-mouth, to let the person know they are doing that part of the technique #< WATCH VIDEO durfiamroglon.com properly. The video that comes with the kit walks the students through the process several times, in simple, easy-lo-understand terms. The narrator makes clear the importance of CPR, saying, "A person who has stopped breathing cannot get belter without immediate help." The teaching method is an effective one, said students who participated. "I think it's going to stick with me, because it was clear and easy to understand," understand," said 12-year-old Linnca Moulds. Though both she and classmate Sharon Trauzzi had some rudimentary'understanding rudimentary'understanding of CPR through babysitting courses and wliat they've learned from Girl Guides, they say this will help them share the knowledge. "I know my mom knows CPR, but I will teach my sister and my dad," said Sharon. Laerdal Medical makes the kits, and will soon offer them for sale. "If a school wanted to do it, they could have a, sponsor buy the kits," the price for which has not yet been set, said Mr. Nemeth, who says he's "very hopeful" the kits will help spread the word about CPR.
