"But we think with the arena, the team and the position that it is going to be in ; by the time we'd be playing for the cup, I think we are going to be the winning bid for sure." Davies said the formal proposal will go before the selection committee in December, December, when a four-person panel will make : its recommendation as to which city they Jason Liebregts/Metroland Durham Region Media Group Oshawa Generals owner John Davies spoke at a press conference on Tuesday at UOIT Campus Ice Centre, announcing the bid to host the 2008 Memorial Cup. believe is best suited to host the event. A winner will be announced at the 2007 Memorial Cup in Vancouver. Until then, it's down to work for Generals Generals brass in hopes of sweeping the committee off their feet, and it won't be easy. "There is quite a bit of work involved to put together a bid," explained Davies. "Often they are accompanied by a bid book (with) a lot of information about the community, a lot of information about the team. There is a DVD and a video that is often prepared with bids in the past, and of course the financial guarantees of the team. . "A bid has to guarantee certain financial guarantees in terms of profitability" the owner added. "All of those things will be going into our bid over the next six months." Along with the Generals and the City, Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of : Technology will be involved with the bid process, with former school president Gary Polonsky, serving as bid chairman. General Motors of Canada has come aboard as the primary sponsor for the bid, and GM Canada president Michael Grimaldi was on hand for the announcement announcement Tuesday. 'The Oshawa Generals, the City of Oshawa and GM should be a winning partnership," he said. Generals coach and general manager Brad Sclwood attended the 2006 Memorial Memorial Cup in Moncton with several other Generals staff members, and came away with a better idea of what he'll need to do to ice a championship calibre team within two years. "It was a great experience in Moncton. We met with some of the owners and GMs and just trying to learn some of the things you need to know before you actually actually bid," he said. "It might sound corny, but I think you have to do it litcrally posi- tion by position. You have to be strong down the middle, you can't rely on too few people to get it done. I really learned that (last) week." With John Tavares, Dean Howard and Brett Parnham, Selwood believes he had a trio of centremen to build around. Goaltcnding.is another crucial area that remains a question mark, but Selwood's sure he answered that by selecting Anthony Anthony Peters in the recent OHL draft, -. "I think obviously you have to be strong in goal," he said. "Projecting ahead, things can change, but I think Peters is definitely the guy that (we) can build around." s||li J= to » • ~ u si « .y*§ & m to »- ^2 5 Eu«8 jIIÜ'1-U 8J-: ë | = 2006 Saturn ION-1 Quad Coupe & ION-1 Sedan MSRP 140 hp Ecotec" engine standard n.ro'oi--^ S I Sls s .li •saisi 1 " ',-v -CoS E "S v ' i oil wM ;g E mg UPGRADE TO AN ION-2 FOR ONLY 249 f|ijj So uSY. - - ^ X 1smm O y™ '* t_3 as rtJO CJ ,. <a 5. --f S c Li- ÿ'VP'vW si§-gs°g*aj i'fy |esi 1-1=1 f§|| Jj J J-f .2 o u> . ro o __ - \^ ; mi •licS-sl ! p -,e 24: .
