J durhamregion.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ June 7,2006 ♦ Page A3 Wilmot Creek seeks access to green bin program First and only community that had to give containers back BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer BOWMANVILLE - They were all binned up with no where to throw at Wilmot Creek a few years ago. Residents of the gated community are asking to be part of the Region's Integrated Residential Residential Waste Management Management System, which includes the green bin kitchen waste program. An error in distribution distribution meant residents of the community, more than two years ago, were among the first to receive the green bins for the kitchen waste program, program, said Regional Councillor Councillor Charlie Trim. "It's ironic that Wilmot Creek residents were first to receive (the bins) and then, Charlie Trim within a week or so, have them brought back, and not have the opportunity to use them," he said. So, the Municipality has moved that the Region be requested to implement the program at Wilmot Creek as soon as possible. "They brought it to our attention. We have assessed the site, to see if it's feasible for collection services," said Leo Coe, waste supervisor with Durham Region. According to Clarington's resolution, Wilmot Creek "is able to meet the Region's standards for waste collection." Because .the community is a private one, which includes private roads and garbage collection, collection, the facility is not currently eligible for the program, "It's very difficult because the roads are privately privately maintained and the services are all privately maintained, too," said Mr. Coe. As of 2006, residents of Wilmot Creek are. paying for waste collection at the same rate as all other prop erty owners, explained Clarington Finance Director Nancy Taylor. Previously, residents were charged a fiat rate for garbage, outside of the tax rate. But, after a five-year phase-in, the tax rate includes garbage, which means Wilmot Creek residents residents are paying for it. "As of 2006, they do pay on exactly the same basis as every other residential household," said Ms. Taylor. There's a need to get Wilmot Creek online with the waste program, program, especially given the fact they're already paying for it, said Coun. Trim. "Durham Region is spending a bundle of money advertising about kitchen waste, and composting, composting, and here we have 800 people in this community being told they can't do it," he said.
