J I durhamrcgion.com Leading auto expert cautions reliance on new vehicle manufacturing Urges region to think broader BY I2ABELA JAROSZYNSKI Staff Writer OSHAWA -- Speaking to economic economic and political leaders from across Durham Region, Dennis 1 DesRosicrs delivered a positive message. 'The auto industry is not in cri- • sis," Canada's leading auto expert told the group at a breakfast meeting meeting on last week. The future reality for Oshawa is a smaller, but stronger, auto manufacturing industry, he said. "You are better off with a strong, restructured General Motors," Mr. DesRosiers added. "It is better for the community." But he cautioned that an over- reliance on new vehicle manufacturing manufacturing will mean that the region is not taking full advantage of the economic benefits that the auto sector can bring. The auto sector is a $144 billion industry in Canada, but only $50 billion of that comes from new vehicle manufacturing. "It is a big industry out there," Mr. DesRosicrs DesRosicrs said, pointing out the $25 billion being made in the used vehicle market, the $52 billion auto financing sector and the $17 billion aftermarket indusliy. 'There are pockets all around, so think broader than just new vehicle manufacturing," he said. "I'm not trying to downplay manufacturing, manufacturing is critical, but (the industry) is much bigger than just manufacturing." His advice for a healthy auto future in Oshawa revolves around two key issues: flexibility and DENTURES $94.000 ■™"each intellectual capital. "The consumer is the controlling controlling factor," he said. 'The consumer consumer is king." Because the consumer demands flexibility, the industry must cater to it, he said, adding that flexibility is the way of the future for parts makers as well as vehicle manufacturers. Mr. DesRosiers said communities communities can assist vehicle manufacturers manufacturers by encouraging the second • key trend: intellectual capital. Engineers and designers have the option of working anywhere in the world, he said, so it is up to politicians and city planners to make the area suitable for intellectual intellectual workers by developing arts and culture. Intellectual jobs arc the fastest growing aspect in the automotive sector, he said. General Motors is leading the way with its investment investment in the Beacon Project and, with a big chunk of the investment investment going to UOIT, Durham is in a good place to cater to that sector. Oshawa Mayor John Gray said Mr. DesRosiers comments were encouraging. "Oshawa has a good message to sell," he said. "Let's be more aggressive with it. Communities that are aggressive are the ones that arc going to win." [(905) I Offer ex; 434-46031 expires June 30 th , 2006 BIRKENSTOCK Keep right on walking! Canadian Statesman This Week A message from Jim Abemethy Your candidate for Mayor Dear Clarington Residents, For some time now I have been concerned about the level of corporate contributions that are made to municipal election campaigns. Recent studies have shown that in some 905 area code municipalities these contributions are as high as 90 per cent. Now that I have embarked upon my campaign to be your Mayor, I would like to state for the record that I do not propose to encourage or accept any campaign donâtions from corporations which may be dealing with our Council or supplying goods and services to our Municipality. I personally feel very strongly that the acceptance of such funds can very easily be perceived as a conflict of interest. When elected, I intend to adhere to this strict standard of conduct. I am sure that you will agree with my position in this matter and I look forward to your support in the upcoming fall election. Sincerely, Jim Abemethy Your candidate for Mayor Phone: 905-983-8270 email: jimabemethy@hotmail.com This message approved by Jim DaCosta, Official agent for Jim Abemethy TABRICLAND CANADA'S LARGEST CAcmnu caqdip iuctdidiitad FASHION FABRIC DISTRIBUTOR MQXmffiFK* OaytoytiyQdee) *ex£MSM «ÊIVÊPJW0É® smmmssfM gm^ehtimtnmhifmttimA Ourjentirelstodii/t WÆffl Our/etitireistocky pmemŸmeitiçs "AF ruiyjuà üéàn'fim mi'inftryf m%t>M ■ SSÜSS&ifÛSSi.. sjMmwWm ir ' Mqmemy f mum se&onfnurrieulttnltjmttn SQ%oM mmAttock? a mmy/ 1 "Êkmum wmtmm mmtt { ?
