Cunliffe attend Legion Track and Field Championships BELLEVILLE - Three Courtice runners runners came home from a weekend track and field meet in Belleville with plenty of medals, a provincial record and two qualifying spots in the Royal Canadian Legion Ontario Track and Field Championships Championships to be held in Timmins in July. Kaleigh Robinson, Evan Esselink and BJ. Cunliffe competed in the District F qualifying meet in Belleville, where 40 athletes were picked, based on place and performance, to represent this district in the Provincial Championships. All three are Grade 8 students at Dr. Emily Stowe Public School and were compet- ' ing against athletes from Grade 9 in their events, which makes their accomplishments accomplishments all the more impressive. Robinson won and qualified for the provincials in the girls' 15 and under •• javelin throw. She was also selected '■ - to represent the district in the 800m. <' Esselink qualified for the provincial meet by finishing second in the boys' !" 15 and under 3000m race. He will also be competing in the triple jump. In the same meet, Cunliffe broke the Minor Track Association provincial record in the 1500m by recording a time of 4:22.3 in the boys' 15 and under race. He broke the old record of 4:25.7 set in 1996 by over three seconds. Although he broke the record, he finished third behind two Grade 9 runners and was selected as the first alternate in both the 800 and 1500m races for the District F Team. Robinson and Esselink will be traveling traveling to Timmins in the second week of July to compete against the best athletes from around the province.
