On Wednesday June 28th it was my honour to announce the arrival of the Clarington Holiday Inn Express & Suites; and the Clarington Convention Centre to our community. This is extraordinary news for our community - for our tourism businesses as well as for those businesses that need to find accommodation for visiting professionals and dignitaries. The 100-room Clarington Holiday Inn Express & Suites represents an investment of approximately $ 8 million to our community. The Clarington Convention Centre is another $ 8 million investment that will provide 20,000 square feet of meeting and banquet hall space that will enable us to capture some of the lucrative meeting and conference market that, to date, is untapped by Clarington. Although owned separately, both facilities will reside in the area along Base Line Road, between the Clarington Auto Mall (on the east) and the Bowmanville Indoor Soccer/Outdoor Lacrosse recreation centre (on the west). Both will be visible from the Highway 401. This combined investment will bring 40 full-time. and 35 part-time jobs to the community and its contribution to our local economy will be enormous. Clarington Council, with the assistance of our private sector partners, made attracting a state-of-the-art hotel and conference centre a priority. Being able to make this announcement is not only good for Clarington tourism and the business community but will increase our standing as the most suitable location for nuclear new build. Although details on construction start and completion dates are' not available at this time, I encourage you to stay tuned. As the plans progress, we will report them here and on the Municipality's web site: www.clarinaton.net.
