The Bowmanville/Westside Marshes Conservation Area officially opened last week. The 80-hectare area includes two provincially-significant coastal wetlands, wetlands, and a new 20-.car pay-and-dis- play parking facility. As well, there is an information kiosk, a 1.5-kilometre hiking trail loop, two raised viewing mounds, and several new, interpretive • signs. The Westside Marsh was originally owned by St. Marys Cement Inc. The landowners and local community negotiated an agreement that protects much of the wetland and creates new waterfront parklands. The area was recently-dedicated to CLOCA. The area has undergone extensive restoration over the last few years. Continuing restoration work within the Westside Marsh and the land connecting it to the Bowmanville Marsh will provide more high quality wildlife habitat and enhance existing habitat that already harbours many wildlife species, said a media release from Ducks Unlimited. "The conservation area has two important roles in the community,, said CLOCA chairman Jim Schell. "First, to protect our watershed health through the preservation of these two wonderful wetlands, and the surrounding surrounding environment, and second, to provide the public an opportunity to be active and experience nature within our community."
