Home improvements often involve significant time, money and effort on the part of the homeowner. They may also require a building permit from the Municipality. WHAT IS A BUILDING PERMIT? A building permit is your permission, from your city, to begin -,construction/demolition. Before receiving a building permit your plans must be approved, and must comply with all applicable laws, including the Ontario Building Code. WHY l$?A BUILDING PERMIT REQUIRED? Permits are required for many important reasons, including the protection of yourself and others. A building permit will ensure that your construction is safe, and legal. It will ensure that all fire, structural and building standards are met, and that your project complies with the zoning by-law. Building permits exist to protect you, future homeowners, building occupants, and the community. WHEN IS A BUILDING PERMIT REQUIRED? Under the Ontario Building Code Act, a building permit is required to construct, demolish, renovate, alter, install or change the use of a building. Convention meeting space facilities that are constructed within the hotel building,,on the same lot as the hotel or an abutting lot, are deemed to be part of the hotel" and adds "hotel" to those public .and other buildings exempted from development charges imposed by By law 2005-108.
