J durhamregion.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ July 19,2006 ♦ Page A3 'Hoping' for a good retirement Newcastle couple bids fond farewell to business BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer NEWCASTLE - After almost a quarter of a century, Newcastle is los ing Hopes. Ron and Judy Hope arc retiring, closing closing the Stedmans store that has been on Newcastle's main drag for a generation, and selling the rest of the business. The Scars outlet and the video store will carry on under new ownership. The pair first opened a video store, kitty-comer from where their business is now located, in 1982. They purchased purchased the Stedman's store in 1989, moving across the road then, at about the same time as Mr. Hope retired from his 30-year career at GM. But, the time has come to retire entirely, entirely, said Mrs. Hope. "Life's too short," she said, standing in her usual post, behind the counter in the store. "Ron's 64 and I'm 61 and I think it's time we played... we're going to do what we darn well feel like." The pair doesn't have an elched-in- slonc plan in terms of what they'll do, but travel is high on the agenda. "Life's been good to us. We're both healthy and want to travel if we can," said Mrs. Hope. "We want to see Canada Canada mostly." Asked what they'll miss most, both say, "the people." "Our core customers have been so loyal and friendly. They're just like a family," said Mr. Hope. He'll also miss the community involvement, he said. He's served in a number of capacities in Newcastle, most recently on the sesquicentennial committee. "I belong to about every committee," said Mr. Hope with a laugh, noting he'll miss "the community work with some of the great, wonderful people. I do it because I love the community." The pair will be leaving Newcastle after they hang up the closed sign Aug. 25, but it's not permanent, said Mr. Hope, who has lived in Newcastle since marrying Mrs. Hope, a life-long resident of the village, in 1964. "We're going to leave Newcastle for the short term, but eventually, after we've got the freedom or travel bug or whatever you want to call it out, we want' to he turn here becaqse we have some pretty, deep roots here."
