dnrhamregion.com Redmen drop opener THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ August 9,2006 ♦ Page B3 Brampton Excelsiors looking for fifth straight playoff win over Brooklin BY BRIAN MCNAIR Staff Editor BRAMPTON - The Brooklin Redmen arc hoping this isn't a case of déjà vu. Or, if it is, it dates back to 2000. Renewing a long-standing playoff rivalry with the Brampton Excelsiors on Monday Monday at the Powerade Centre, the Redmen experienced an all-too-familiar result, losing losing 16-12 in Game 1 of the Major Series Lacrosse semifinal. Since the Redmen prevailed in a gruelling gruelling seven-game final en route to their last Mann Cup national championship in 2000, the Excelsiors have definitely had the better better of the rivalry, eliminating the Redmen in each of the following four seasons. Last year was the lone exception, as the Redmen failed to reach the playoffs. In order for a different outcome this time around, Redmen coach Ian McGough says his club will have to be a lot more sharp. ' than it was on Monday. "We got caught flat-footed in the fust period and they took it to us," McGough of a game the Excelsiors led 84 through one period. "As a team, we just weren't as sharp as we needed to be and I think everybody in the room knows that." The Redmen did mount a charge early in the second period, narrowing the gap to 8-7, but the Excelsiors scored the next four and were never challenged again. Dan Teal and Josh Sanderson led the Brampton attack, combining for 17 points, including four goals from Teat and three from Sanderson. Aaron Wilson also had a hat trick for the winners, while Colin Doyle and Brodie Merrill chipped in with four points apiece. Gavin Prout stepped his game up to the necessary level for the Redmen, scoring three times and assisting on six others. Captain Shawn Williams also had a productive productive night with seven helpers, while Mike Hominuck had three goals and two assists. Other Brooklin goals were scored by Andrew Burkholder, with a pair, Ashton McLean, Mike McLellan, Corey Leigh and Jeff Zywicki. Steve Dietrich started in net for the Redmen, but was replaced by Gee Nash midway through the game with Brampton ahead 12-7. As of yesterday, McGough hadn't decided decided which goalie to go with for Game 2 tonight at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre. "Both Steve and Gee arc great goalies," goalies," says McGough, placing no blame on Monday's'outcome on his nctminders. "Defensively we weren't.sound at all. We gave them a lot of opportunities that I don't think we'll do again." Although he realizes his club will need to steal at least one game in the always-diffi- cull Brampton building, McGough wasn't about to look past tonight's home game. "Right now we're just going to have to focus on Wednesday and getting ourselves back into the scries," he says. "I guess one positive (from Monday) is that we could play so poorly and still be in the game." NOTES: The Redmen will host Game 2 tonight, Game 4 next Monday and, if ncc- essaiy, Game 6, on Friday, Aug. 18, all at 8 p.m. Brampton hosts Game 3 this Friday and, as needed, Game 5 next Wednesday, and Game 7 on Saturday, Aug. 19... The series features seven players who recently won gold for Canada at the World Field Lacrosse Championships: Shawn Williams, Williams, Steve Toll, Stephen Hoar, Gavin Prout and Jeff Zywicki of the Redmen as well as Colin Doyle and Brodie Merrill of the Excelsiors. - . : .i; - (L ■ ' v ■' ' paaTSi fMii imp sunup I ^ or of our remaining full day camplf ACCEPTING REGISTRATIiSl 2006/07 ADULT HOCÉS to confirm your spbtli CLARINGTON HYUNDAI SUMMER SELL DOWN allies for late victory CLARINGTON,-- Jerusalem Lodge No. 31 A.F.&À.M.
