Page B4 ♦ THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ August 16,2006 durhamregion.com Ontario shut out of national lacrosse gold 2006 Festival wraps up with new champions in Peewee, Bantam WHITBY -- This is probably not what Derek Keenan had in mind. Although the head coach of the Ontario Ontario Peewee team said last week he was hoping to see parity in lacrosse across the country in the years ahead, he surely wasn't thinking his powerful team would be on the outside looking in for the national championship game Saturday-at Iroquois Park. Yet, there he was, after Ontario settled for a bronze medal, watching Iroquois prevail in a thrilling championship game, 7-6 over British Columbia at the Ontario Lacrosse Festival Saturday afternoon. .What's more, Ontario also had to be satisfied with a bronze in the bantam division, as British Columbia downed Iroquois 9-6 in the final later Saturday. Both Ontario teams entered the tournament tournament as defending champs, but had hopes of a repeat dashed in the semifinals semifinals Friday, as the pcewces lost 8-5 to Iroquois and the bantams fell 5-4 in overtime to B.C. "The Iroquois-Ontario game was what you want every lacrosse game to be, exciting back and forth action to the final buzzer" said Ron MacSpadycn, Ontario Lacrosse Association marketing director, director, in reference to the peewee match. The bantam semifinal was its equal, said Tyler Dalton, OLA Promotions director. "Everyone in the arena was at the edge of their seats waiting for that one goal to make the difference," he said. "Ontario made a mistake arid British Columbia took full advantage of it." At least both Ontario teams regrouped in time to win a, medal, as the peewee team downed Alberta 8-2 in the bronze medal game and the bantams got past Alberta, 7-5 in overtime. The Ontario peewee team had plenty of local content in addition to Keenan, who hails from Osliawa. Devon Shore of Ajax led the team and division in scoring with 13-22-35 numbers numbers in 10 games, while Brandon Staal of Courtice was also among the leaders with 14-16-30 numbers. Port Perry's Matthew Hossack, Darryl Comes and Jason Weber of Whitby, Gabriel Burn- * side and Ryan Keenan of Osliawa and Pickering's Drake Caggiula also contributed. contributed.
