Police say the incident occurred at about 4:10 p.m., as a man attempted to steal a vehicle from the driveway of an Ashdale Crescent home, in the King Street East and Liberty Street South area of Bowmanville. Bowmanville. Police say he began choking a 39-year- old woman who was sitting in a vehicle parked in her driveway; "He just approaches this woman sitting sitting in her car... and starts choking her," said Durham Regional Police spokesman David Selby. "Something happens" to change his mind about continuing his assault on the woman, and "he sees a truck nearby." Then, according to cops, he grabbed the keys to the truck, which were outside as the owner did some, work on the vehicle, and started it, The owner of that vehicle reportedly reached in the truck to prevent the theft, but wound up being punched in face. He was then dragged for several several metres before falling away from the truck. "He backs up and nails two other cars on the roa'd," before taking off toward King Street, said Mr. Selby ' Officers from the Clarington. Community Community Police office chased the truck briefly, . but called the pursuit off for safety reasons. reasons. "They didn't follow him for very long," said Mr. Selby. "They followed him on Hwy..2, but then his speed gets up to the point where they're concerned and they backed off." Officers make a judgment call during police chases, to decide whether there is risk to others. If someone could get hurt or killed, "that almost always outweighs the need to capture the person," said the police spokesman. Since police had a good description of the individual and the truck, the potential danger of the chase outweighed the need to capture, said Mr. Selby. About four hours later, the stolen pickup arrived at a Toronto police station, where the accused surrendered on an outstanding warrant. "He decided to come in and get it cleared up," said Mr. Selby. Police say they found three grams of crack cocaine on the man at the time of man missing CLARINGTON - Police are asking for the public's assistance in locating a 47-year-old Clarington man who has not been seen since Wednesday.
