Laurence Bishop, who starred on the Lords' volleyball court in 1992-93 before moving his talents to the sidelines as the head coach of the program from 1993- 97, and Bill Crowdis, owner of several OCAA accomplishments from the late 1990s and who is also a former coach of the women's basketball program, have been selected as the 2006 inductees into the Durham College Sports Hall of Fame. Bishop, a native of Brockville, will enter the builder category thanks in part to his involvement in establishing the Intercollegiate Athletic Academic Success Success Program at Durham, which supports student-athlete academic success. Bishop also spearheaded the plan to construct the multi-court beach volleyball facility to the northeast of the Campus Athletic Centre. In 1992-93, his only year as a player in green and gold, Bishop led the Lords to an OCAA division title, while being named to the OCAA championship all- star team and capturing an OCAA bronze mcdaL Soon after graduation, Bishop assumed the head coaching duties of the men's volleyball program, and in his four years, captured a gold and two bronze medals, while compiling a 61-23 record. As for Crowdis, Crowdis, the basketball standout made an impact from the first moment he stepped onto a Lords court. In his freshman year he helped lead the Lords men's team to its first Division I OCAA Provincial. Championship Championship and the school's first ever National Championship. Along with that, the list of accomplishments accomplishments is quite impressive for Crowdis, who is now a basketball coach at Fleming College in Peterborough. • OCAA League All-Star twice • OCAA All-Millennium team as one of the 12 best players in OCAA Men's Basketball history , • Led OCAA in scoring in 1998-99 Bill Crowdis (25.7 ppg) • OCAA & CCAA Championship All- Star along with being named OCAA All- Star Game MVP in 1997-98 • CCAA All-Canadian in 1997-98 and a CCAA Academic All-Canadian in 1998- 99 • Two-time DC .Male Athlete of the year • OCAA Male Athlete of the Year in i 998-99 • OCAA Hall of Fame member Bishop and Crowdis will become the 28th and 29th members inducted during the Nov. 23 ceremony at DC/UOIT. In other Durham College news, the OCAA announced the Lords will host three, major events this upcoming season. The 2007 OCAA men's basketball champiohships return to the court at Durham March 1-3,2007. The Lords last hosted the event in 2005, however, they didn't play in the tournament thanks to a crushing loss in their final regular season game, which eliminated them from playoff playoff contention. Back for another go-around in Oshawa ; is the OCAA basketball all-star weekend, which will feature a variety of events in late January 2007. The final event Durham will host is the OCAA annual general meeting April 30, 1 2007. THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ August 23,2006 ♦ Page B7 Blue Knights turn out winners on and off the field OSHAWA - The success of the Oshawa Lady Blue Knights is fairly evident when looking at their accomplishments accomplishments on the field. After all, both the under-15 and under-19 teams recently won provincial provincial championships for a fourth and third time in a row, respectively. You have to dig a little deeper to appreciate what all that success is meaning off the field for a number of individual players. Kristie Jennings is the latest who will happily attest to that. ' Jennings, a graduate of Whitby's Anderson Collegiate and the Oshawa Oshawa Lady Blue Knights' program, has' received an athletic scholarship for lacrosse and will be attending Mercy- hurst College in Pennsylvania this fall. She is the fourth Lady Blue Knight to earn such a reward. Jennings started her lacrosse playing with the under-15 Blue Knight House League to get some off-season training for hockey. She then went on to be part of the under-15 rep program, and has continued to take part in rep, select and house league over the past few years. • Jennings has also been a standout high school player at Anderson and was the leading scorer in LOSSA league play this past season. Jennings attributes her interest in lacrosse to Barb Boycs, founder of the Oshawa Lady Blue Knights, and credits her high school lacrosse coach, Carolyn Toll, for pushing her to pursue lacrosse at a higher level. She has also played hockey for 14 years and was a member of the Whitby Wolves PWHL junior team last season. season. Jennings will be pursing her education education in criminal justice.
