"' durhamregion.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ September 6,2006 <► Page A5 Event evolved into community calling BY JULIE CASHIN-OSTER Special to The Statesman NEWCASTLE -Wisestock 2006, held this past weekend in Newcastle, was everything and more organizers- hoped for. What began as an art and music festival evolved into a "community "community calling." . The celebration was held at Black Lab Studio in the Green Powerhouse, located on Lockhart Road. It is hoped this will become an annual event. "This is our, peaceful (r)evolution," said Jaison Gibson, Black Lab Studio member. "This weekend is an opportunity opportunity for free thought, a three-day - forum for people to learn and share." Billed as a peaceful (Revolution, Wisestock featured three days of music, intertwined with original art exhibits; debates and discussions on alternative and peaceful solutions to problems we face as a community. The festivities started late Friday afternoon marking the official opening of Black Lab Studio, a resource facility facility that promotes social conscious- . ness through thé arts and music. With plenty of space to set up camp, early arrivals were entertained by Magical Colours. ■ Saturday rocked with the music starting at 2:30 with 10 bands playing until midnight. A variety of musical styles were represented - acoustic, jazz, blues, folk rock, punk, country, a true reflection of the Indie music scene. . Chickenfist started the party on Saturday, Saturday, followed by the Kent Boys, the Bodhi Duo, Antique Toys, the Strip, the Comfortable Groove, US , and Them, the Rccroom, Tripping Hazard and the Micronitc- Filters finished the night off. After the live music DJ Brian Dunn played a wide spectrum of music for the night owls. Sunday was a quieter day. Musical styles were that of poet and storyteller. storyteller. Performers included Susan Latimer, Bradley Boy, Trish Robb, Janetville Dug, Glen Bensley, Cam Clark, Huck Balson, Jeebus and The Dude. There was a wide range of artistic styles and interpretations represented. Among the art displayed, works by Ann Barlow, Walt Ruston, J7193 and Jennifer Lynn where viewed. Discussions evolved around issues that are in our face now - health care, alternative forms of energy, maternity maternity leave, marijuana, problems with local government and implications of nuclear power, environmental issues and urban sprawl. , It is the . goal of the members of Black Lab Studio to have a loose plan and better directions for Claring- ton/GTA and share this with decision makers. Poet, author known many names BY CATHERINE VIVIAN Special to The Statesman NEWCASTLE - Helena Coleman, Coleman, a celebrated poet and author, was bom on April '28, 1860 in Newcastle to Reverend Francis Coleman and his wife Emmeline Maria Adams. Her brother was A.P. Coleman, the famous geologist. geologist. She was educated at Ontario Ladies College in Whitby where, upon graduating she received the gold medal in music. Miss Coleman Coleman was hired as the head of the music department at the school. She held the post for many years, leaving in 1892. At this time Miss Coleman turned her hand to poetry and prose. She made a name for herself herself in the literary world using a variety of pen names such as Helen Saxon. Catherine G. Brown, Helen Grey, Winnifred Cotter and many others. She published published in such journals as the Saturday Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal, Red Book, Cosmopolitan, Cosmopolitan, Modem Women, Canadian Courier and Atlantic Monthly to name a few. In 1906 her work was published under her own name in the book Songs and Sonnets. Other books written by Miss Coleman include Marching Men, Songs, Sheila and Others: Simple Annals of an Uhromantic Household. An unusual woman for her time, Miss Coleman travelled extensively throughout her life despite the hardship of having to use two crutches to get around, a result of having polio as a child. Her travels included Berlin, Germany where she did her postgraduate postgraduate music studies, as well as various American and European destinations. Miss Coleman died on Dec. 7, 1953.
