L Page B2 ♦ THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ October 11,2006 Same old for Gens Despite, first win of the season Sunday, Oshawa in last place , in the OHL BY BRIAN MCNAIR Staff Writer i OSHAWA -- For a team that was ' supposed to turn a corner this season, 1 the Oshawa Generals are looking a lot 1 like they have the past two years. - Which, in a season they are making a bid for the 2008 Memorial Cup, is not ! a good thing. Although the Generals finally earned ; their first win of the season Sunday at the Civic Auditorium, escaping with a 4-3 decision after a shootout with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, they ! were blasted the next day in Belleville, falling,6-0 to George Burnett's Bulls. "I was really encouraged by Sunday night, equally discouraged on Monday," Monday," says Brad Selwood, coach and GM of the Generals.' "There's no way I'm quitting on these kids, but I was disappointed watching them come apart as a group (Monday)." The results leave the team with statistics statistics that are eerily similar to the past two seasons, most discouragingly the worst record in the Ontario Hockey League at 1-5-0-0. Selwood, in his third season as GM and first as head coach, has long spoken spoken of rectifying some areas in much need of rectifying; namely, the team's road record and efficiency on special teams. Unfortunately, that has yet to take place: the Generals are now 0-4 on the road, 18th on the power play (13.6%) and 17th on the penalty kill (75%) in the 20-team league. Jason Liebregts / Metroland Durham Region Media Group OSHAWA -- Oshawa Generals' Cal Clutterbuck reaches for the puck with Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds' Andrew Desjardins close behind in OHL hockey action at Oshawa Civic on Sunday. The Generals picked up a 4-3 win in a shootout, but it was the only victory this weekend. On Friday they were doubled 8-4 by the Barrie Colts, and on Monday blanked in Belleville Belleville by the Bulls 6-0. The bad news is the young team appears to be in desperate desperate need of the leadership on the ice, and isn't likely to get it from departed overagers Peter Tsimikalis, on an AHL tryout contract in Albany, and Peter Aston, playing professionally in Finland. ■ The bottom line so far has been a team that is, predictably, allowing a lot of goals and, not so predictably, not scoring. The scoresheet indicates it was something something more than that. MacKellar, back for a third season as captain of the. Whitby Dunlops, ensured the team would escape Norwood with two points Saturday, scoring four times in a 5-3 victory over the Vipers. Although just two games into the Eastern Eastern Ontario Senior A Hockey League season, the Dunlops have to be encouraged encouraged by the start, having now beaten their archrivals in both friendly and not-, so-friendly environs. "That's always big;" MacKellar says of Saturday's road win. "The first year, I don't think we beat them at all in Norwood. It's hard enough to beat them anywhere. It was a real team effort." The Dunlops have obviously done a better, job so far adjusting to the way the game, is being played, as they were short-handed only.five limes and killed off all of Norwood's power-play chances. chances. The Vipers, on the other hand, were cracked down on hard by the officials Saturday, allowing two Whitby goals on a whopping 18 power plays. MacKellar opened the scoring with an unassisted effort 6:25 into the game, scored with the man advantage midway through the first and late in the second, then added the insurance tally into an empty net with just under a minute remaining. He also missed a penalty shot and a wide open net during the game, otherwise otherwise he might have surpassed his five- goal effort against Belleville a year ago. Although clearly the leader, MacKellar says the key to the team this season is the depth up front, and the commitment level of the players. In years gone by, the team has struggled to send a full lineup to some road games, but Saturday saw 16 skaters and two goalies make the trek to Norwood on a long weekend. "When everyone's healthy, we have four lines that can play," he says. "I think we're younger and faster this year, which is fantastic... It's good to see the commitment." NOTES: Colin Baker scored the other Whitby goal Saturday. Brent Gaylor, Jay McAuley and Matt Cardwell each had one assist... Chad Ford, making his second straight start in goal, made 27 saves for the win... Craig Buttar, Mike Banks and Mike Williams replied for Norwood... Jay Cannings, who had reportedly left the team last week, was back in the lineup Saturday. Paul Brooks, who played in the Dunlops' inaugural year but not last season, also laced up... Justin Cardwell, Martin Kearns, Sean Firth and injured Matt Armstrong were scratches... Ford and defenceman Corey Bricknell were part of a melee with three seconds remaining remaining in which Bricknell and Norwood's Mark Cranley were each assessed two. fighting and two game misconduct penalties... penalties...
