Seeing snow covered trees and lawns may be a beautiful sight, but there Is a dark and treacherous side. As beautiful as it may be on the trees, snow on our sidewalks and roadways can become icy paths almost without notice. The Municipal Operations Department is responsible for keeping municipal roads safe and cleared. In the last two years, Municipal crews have responded to over 120 snow "events." Our "Snow Fighters" require the assistance of the public to make sure that their job can be done without risking the safety of themselves and others - especially children. When the snow piles up, please make sure children in your neighbourhood understand the dangers of building forts in the snow banks created by the plough. Help keep our roads safe by making sure that your vehicle is not parked on the street during or immediately following a significant snow fall. All winter maintenance vehicles use distinctive flashing blue lights. Use caution at all times. Follow well behind the plow, allowing adequate distance from flying snow and sand from the truck. Let's work together to ensure everyone enjoys the beautiful side of snow and winter. During the winter, please do not place your garbage on snow banks or icy locations. This makes for unsafe conditions for collection staff. Also; make sure your garbage will not interfere with road snow removal. Call the Region of Durham at 1-800- 667-5671 if you have any question^ The Sidewalk/Windrow Snow" Clearing prbgram also contributes to the safe enjoyment of winter. Tjhis service, is available to any senior (65 years'+) or person with a'physical disability who applies and complies with some basic criteria. Applicants must live in the urban area of Bowmanville, Courtice, Orono, Newcastle, or in the Hamlets of Newtonville, Tyrone, Leskard, Haydon, Kendal, Solina, Hampton, Burketori, Enniskillen, Maple Grove, Enfield, Mitchell Corners or Kirby. The service is initiated once a snow fall ends and there is more than one inch of snow accumulated on the sidewalk. Clearing driveway windrows commences once all municipal streets have been cleared and windrows are in access of six inches. Each year over 600 residents register for this program. Please note that the resident would still be responsible to provide sand/salt as required. Our staff is committed to providing you and the community the highest level of service possible. For residents who live on a cul-de-sac, the Operations staff will do everything possible to remove the snow. Please understand that there are over 100 cul-de-sacs in the Municipality and no cost effective way to avoid piling it temporarily in and along the cul-de-sac. Please remember that municipal roads are cleared on a priority basis to ensure that routes used by emergency vehicles can get through if needed. Our crews work continuously until the job is done. We ask for your patience and assure you that we are coming! Our night patrol monitors the roads to ensure that when you head to work or school, you will find a safe passage on our municipal roadway system. m Model Advertisement # 1 NAVIGABLE WATERS PROTECTION ACT .
