IMBillilHIl PAGE B2 The Canadian Statesman November29,2006 Dunnies' stars come out to shine www.durhamrcgion.com Contribute to win at all star game WHITBY -- In a season of dominance dominance for the Whitby Dunlops so far, it's appropriate they also dominated the annual all-star game Saturday. • Representing the Dunlops and the .Eastern Ontario Senior A Hockey League, Jay McAuley, Ron Baker, . Peter MacKellar, Steve Birch and Chad Ford each figured prominently jn a 3-2 overtime win for the East over the West's Major League Hock ey stars. McAuley scored twice, including die winner 4:28 into overtime, and Ford was named the East's most valuable player after stopping all 16 shots he faced in 28:35 between the pipes. Baker helped set up both McAuley goals, while MacKellar helped out on one. Birch scored the only goal of the first two periods, finally breaking the ice 13:04 into the second period. There were plenty of other familiar faces in the game as well, including former Dunlop Ian Martin, nowwidi the Marmora Lakers. Former Oshawa Generals Jim Baxter, Baxter, Stacey Britstone and T.J. Aceti played for the West, while anodter, ' Nick Lees of die Norwood Vipers, suited up for the East. The Dunlops went right back into league play the next night, running their record to 13-1 with a 7-3 victory victory over the Vipers in Norwood Sunday. The Dunnies have this Saturday off and are back in Norwood again on Sunday. Team OHL beats Russian Selects From page B1 ' get the puck to you and they are : just so good at every aspect of the game. Everything falls into place. We got four beautiful goals, we worked hard, finished our checks and everything was positive." Oshawa native and former Bow- manville Eagle James Neal of the Plymouth Whalers supplied a perfect example of what finishing a check is all about. Neal, who also picked up an assist, popped the helmet clean off a Russian player with a bone-jarring hit in front of the penalty box on his first shift. In what could be considered uncharted waters in Oshawa, a Peterborough Petes player was actually cheered within the confines of the Generals rink. Steve Downie, who is constantly showered with boos when the Petes come to town, was cheered emphatically after scoring Ontario's Ontario's third goal of the night in the second and after a third period tussle with Russian defenceman Andrey Lange, which led to his ejection. Little, who tired three goals in his last game at the GMC 12 days ago, scored the winner in the third on a feed from O'Marra, Ontario's player player of the game. Patrick McNeill of the Saginaw Spirit and 0 'Marra joined Little and Downie on the scoresheet. London Knights goalie Steve Mason was solid in net for the OHL, stopping 29 shots, while his counterpart Ilia Proskuryakov blocked 32. Current Generals coach/GM Brad Selwood joined former bench boss Stan Butler as assistants assistants for the game, while head coach Craig Hartsburg had his eyes locked on certain players who'll hear their names called next month when Team Canada announces the roster for the World Junior Championship selection camp in Calgary. If Tavares earns a spot and eventually eventually makes the team, he'll join a handful of others as the only 16- year-olds to suit up for Canada at the event. NOTES: Generals forward Cal Clutterbuck also played in the game, registering a coiiple of chances and playing his usual physical style... The Russians now head west to battle the Western Hockey League all-stars to close out the series. Canada is ahead 4-0 with two games remaining. Baxter rounding into form for Bowmanville Eagles From page B1 "We rely on him to be a top diree on our defence. He logs a ton of minutes minutes and deserves every one he is getting." The compliments speak volumes of the way Baxter has performed this season, and is a lot of responsibility to place on a player in just his second second year of junior hockey. But the Courtice Secondary School graduate has excelled, and the more he plays, the better he gets. "The coaches got me into a lot of situations last season and I got to play a lot, so this year wasn't too big of a change. I get to play a lot coming down to the end of the games and in tight situations. I'm used to it and ready for it," he says of the workload. His hockey pedigree is a strong one. His dad, Jim, a goaltender, attended Union College on a scholarship, scholarship, and was a third round draft choice of the Detroit Red Wings back in 1977. While the NHL route isn't likely, Baxter holds out hope that a scholarship scholarship is in his future. THE SCOOP -- The Eagles bring a 24-2-1-1 record into a 7:30 p.m. faceoff tonight against the 13-9-2- 4 Trenton Sting at the Recreation Complex...Christian Cundari and Scott Freeman had goals in a 2-2 overtime tie against the Wellington Dukes on home ice Sunday. The single single point extends the Eagles' current Unbeaten streak to eight games. The same two teams meet again Friday in Wellington. COUPON COUPON COUPON COUPON BROKEN WINDSHIELD?
