Fires devastated both family homes and businesses, profoundly affecting large and small communities. Colborne and Cramahe experienced their own share of much dreaded flames, smoke, and destruction. The mechanization of fire-fighting equipment, which began around 1910, greatly improved the chances of saving lives and property.
