The annual ritual of having a class school photograph taken extends back more than a hundred years. Most of the class photos of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s were taken outside to facilitate the photographic shooting process and perhaps to celebrate the warm weather of the approaching summer holidays. The fairly long exposure time necessary for capturing the image seems to have negated smiling.
