Vi Milstead's interest in flying began early in her life, obtaining her Private Pilot’s Flight Test in 1939 at age 20. She followed up the next year with her commercial license. Fourteen months after that she acquired her Instructor’s Rating and began teaching at Barker Field in Toronto, the airfield where she first learnt to fly. In 1943 Vi Milstead left Canada for England to use her flying skills in the war effort during World War II.
