Milstead successfully applied for a position with the British Air Transport Auxiliary. She trained at White Waltham Airfield and was mainly based in Cosford. Her primary duties included transferring airplanes between aircraft factories, maintenance facilities and Armed Forces’ operations throughout Great Britain and Allied countries. Milstead attained the rank of First Officer.
