During the years of 1918 and beyond, my Mother would bring my brother Doug and I to Colborne from Codrington to visit Mother’s two maiden Aunts Crescie and Adelia Barringer and another sister Ida and Will Usher.
In winter, by cutter with a little seat of red velvet up front for children. Bricks were preheated and heavily wrapped to retain heat for the cold ride, often travelling across frozen Little Lake. Mother would stable the horses in the church shed at the back of the (United) church while we were visiting. She had to bring the horses feed for the stay.
These trips occurred on weekends because of school, so were in Colborne for Sunday service at Colborne United Church and we thought it was really great with the pipe organ and Aunt Delia teaching Sunday School. Aunt Delia did tatting on linens for brides’ trousseaus. Dora (Philip) Goodfellow was one of these brides.
These trips to Colborne were a highlight of my life and will never be forgotten.
