Incorporated in 1831, the Niagara Harbour and Dock Company brought immense prosperity to Niagara. From 1833 until 1864, this company built over 50 ships of various sizes and repaired hundreds more. Built on marshy land at the mouth of the Niagara River, the company was the only repair facility and dockage area at this end of Lake Ontario in 1831. This company drove Niagara's economy. Houses, businesses, railways and hotels all opened up as a result of the company.
