- Description
- William Caven was born in Scotland in 1830. He immigrated with his family to the Galt area in Canada West while still a school boy. He studied theology with Dr. John Proudfoot in London, Ontario, and in 1852, although still a very young man, was appointed minister of the Presbyterian congregations in St. Marys and Avonbank, Ontario. In 1856, these two charges became separate congregations. Caven remained with the Presbyterian Church in St. Marys until 1866 when he was appointed to Knox College. His parents and other family members had moved from Galt to Motherwell, near St. Marys, when Caven was first appointed minister there. Many members of this extended family remained in the area after he himself had moved to Toronto.
See comment for more information about Caven's career and his place in the Presbyterian Church in Canada. - Notes
