Notes

Matthew Wardell (1842-1934) was born in Canada. In his early years he lived in Toronto with his wife Mary Grace Smale (1845-1937) where he was listed in the Toronto City Directory as an auctioneer, jobber and dry goods merchant. In 1895 the family moved to Huntsville. Matthew rented a store at 77 Main Street East and in 1902 bought the building. During the winter the family lived above the store, but in the summer they lived at their cottage called Bide-A-Wee on Fairy Lake. On December 28, 1911 the store burned to the ground and the family moved to 12 West Road.
Huntsville More Pictures from the Past, describes the house: "When this house was built is unclear, but Sam Quan, the present owner says that the year 1908 is etched into stone underneath the verandah. This unigue house features a main roof, mansard in style, capped by a continuous projected parapet. Emerging from the second floor mansard is the sloped roof of the entrance porch, low in profile in contrast to the steep mansard above. A consistent pattern of round tapered columns supports the porch roof. Originally lattice wood screening enclosed the open space below the porch projecton. Large first-floor windows opening on to the porch assist in merging the enclosed home interior with the semi-enclosed porch area. Similar large second floor windows emerge from the sloped mansard with contrasting gable roofs."
After the death of Matthew and Mary Wardell the house passed to their daughter Maude Nickalls and then in 1944 to their son St. Clair. St. Clair added a large addition at the back and turned the house into two apartments. St. Clair and his wife lived upstairs and rented out the lower unit. After St. Clair's death in 1980 the house was sold to the Quan family who returned it to a single family dwelling.
