- Notes
- See Glenn J. Lockwood. "Smiths Falls: A Social History of the Men and Women in a Rideau Canal Community 1794-1994." Smiths Falls: Corporation of the Town of Smiths Falls, 1994, p.23 provides a brief history of the Falls in a caption for a Nerlich & Co postcard with a similar view - the caption for the Nerlich reads: "Plate 12 A view of the weirs and dams created by millers and Ordnance officials in the river to direct water for industrial use, as photographed from the north looking south towards the canal basin 1903. At the turn of the century this popular postcard view was inaccurately captioned, "The falls at Smith's Falls, Ontario." As a result, these manmade waterfalls below the waste weir feeding water to various mills became traditionally fixed in most people's minds as Smyth's falls during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The original Smyth's falls are depicted in Plate 16." [Plate 16 in Lockwood's book depicts John Burrows 1827 sketch of the south side of Jason Island. The sketch is entitled Ward's Island, Smith's Falls. Archives of Ontario].
