- Notes
- Signage for the 7.9 m (26 ft.) high automated single chamber lock built which was built in 1974 to replace the original historic 1829 combined lock 28, 29 and 30.
The text reads: "Automated lock / The new lock at Combined, opened in 1974, is one of three automated locks on the Rideau Canal. The basic principle of locking through boats by raising and lower water levels is the same for all locks, but the operating mechanisms that allow water in and out of the chamber are different. In manually operated locks, Parks Canada staff crank winches using brute strength to open and close the gates and sluice valves. At this automated lock, staff push buttons to operate electronically the hydraulic valves that open and close the gates and sluices."
