Notes
Glenn J. Lockwood's "Smiths Falls: A Social History of the Men and Women in a Rideau Canal Community 1794-1994", p.449 - plate 179 - the caption reads: "The Chambers memorial public hospital, Smith's Falls, designed by local architect, G.T. Martin, and built by contractor John Davidson in 1912. The rumblings of discontent among the Protestant doctors in Saint Francis hospital were seized upon by the Reverend C.V. Forster Bliss, urging that a public hospital be built on the site of the homestead of John McGill Chambers (Plate 81). In 1910, before any other town in the interior of eastern Ontario dreamed of building a hospital, there was a campaign to build a second hospital at Smith's Falls. The tall Ionic pillars of the front entrance and the twelve foot ceilings inside were intended to make the Chambers memorial hospital more imposing than Saint Francis hospital, effectively setting off a rivalry between the two that would last for over two generations. Doctor Agnes Craine would die here in 1937."
