(CANADIAN BROADSIDE/WWI). Smiths Falls Celebrating the End of the Great War. Monday, November 11th, 1918. No Place (Smiths Falls?): no publisher or printer, nd (1918). Broadside measuring 36.5cm x 15cm, cheap paper printed on the recto only, providing the order and contents of the celebration of the end of the Great War. The details include the order of the 'celebration' or service, beginning with the playing of 'God Save the King', prayers, readings, addresses, hymns, songs, and ends with a second singing of 'God Save the King.' Speakers include the Rev. Canon Bliss, Rev. Dr. Gray, Rev. H.W. Wright, Rev. Father Kelly, Mr. J.L. Hummer and G.F. McKimm. In addition to two hymns, the programme includes the singing of 'The Maple Leaf', 'The Red, White, and Blue' and 'O Canada.'

The lyrics of 'O Canada' are not those we are familiar with today. The version printed on the broadside begins 'O Canada, beloved country, Thou! Hope's holy wreath adorning thy young brow'... The lyrics for the English version were not standardized until 1927 when the lyrics commissioned by Weir were widely accepted. Prior to that there were some 200 versions of the English lyrics to 'O Canada', with many communities across the country using their own versions— so the lyrics used in the Smiths Falls version were the same as those used in Stratford, while the version that was used in Toronto began "Lord of the lands! Beneath thy bending skies; On field and flood, where'er our banner flies."
