Description

Also known in the past as the Rideau Hall Hotel. At one time the former Albion Hotel/Rideau Hall was connected to 30 Chambers Street (http://www.heritagesmithsfalls.ca/properties.html - 30 Chambers Street). The 1906 Ontario Commercial Year Book and Gazetteer listed W.H. Poulin as the owner of the Albion Hotel. It was built in the early 1800s and is located at 11 Market Street South.

Details of the hotel were noted in several sections in Glenn J. Lockwood's "Smiths Falls: A Social History of the Men and Women in a Rideau Canal Community 1794-1994", p.189, plate 90 - "The Alexander Williamson shop and residence, 30 Water (later Chambers) street east ... In 1874 it was connected with the stone Rideau Hall hotel next door on the corner of Chambers and Market streets, which in the late Victorian period became known as the Albion Hotel." ; p.279, plate 116 [birds eye view map of Smiths Falls, 1874] - "...Rideau Hall run by W. Garvin (14) at the corner of Water (later Chambers) and Market streets"... ; p.434 "...the Albion Hotel run by Michael Ward on the northeast corner of Water (later Chambers) and Market streets - otherwise know as "The Bucket of Blood" ... By the late 1880s the "Bucket of Blood" was taken over by William Edgar,..."

Also, a grainy detail of the 1874 birds eye view map of Smiths Falls shows the former Rideau Hall hotel/Albion Hotel when it was attached to the Alexander Williamson shop and residence, 30 Water (later Chambers) street east. It appears dead centre of the image marked as number 14.
